Tinnitus Prevention

Ways to Prevent Tinnitus

Ringing in the ears is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Tinnitus does not only affect your hearing acuity, but as well as other aspects of life. You will find it difficult to sleep at night. There is also a possibility of experiencing depression, easy irritability, and even panic attacks. As the famous saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” So, the easiest way to deal with tinnitus is prevention.

You can significantly reduce the possibility of tinnitus by following these steps:

Avoid playing too loud music

If you are fond of listening to music, then make it a habit to keep the volume in a low to medium setting. Listening to extremely loud sound can damage the auditory nerve endings, which can eventually lead to tinnitus. If you are attending a concert, then you have to make sure you will not come close to the speaker. Keep in mind that the inner ear has sensitive nerve endings and it would only take a few exposures to loud sound to damage these nerve endings.

Wear protective gear for tinnitus prevention

If you are into sports, especially extreme sports, then you have to wear protective gear like helmet. By doing so, you will be able to protect your head in case accident happens. Head damage involving the nerve endings can significantly affect hearing including the possibility of tinnitus.  The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have a great noise meter on this page, NOISE METER, CDC Noise Meterwhich simulates different daily sounds and shows the dB readings.

Watch your medicines

Medications are prescribed by doctors to treat a particular disease condition. However, you should keep in mind that there are medications that can cause tinnitus problem. So, before taking any types of medications you should first consult your doctor for possible side effects. When self-administering, you shouldn’t forget to refer to drug literature. That way, you will be able to find out whether a particular drug causes tinnitus or not.  There are also certain medicines which can help cure tinnitus.

The importance of wearing earplug

If your working environment is too noisy, then the best thing to do is to wear ear protectors such as earplug and earmuffs. You have to remember that prolong exposure to extremely noisy environment can lead to tinnitus and loss of hearing. Wearing ear protector is also recommended to people with tinnitus because continuous exposure to loud sounds can worsen the condition.

Live a healthy life

Tinnitus can be best prevented by living a healthy life. This does not mean you have to completely give up alcohol, but if you can then it would be better. If you are used to drinking alcohol excessively, then it is now time to reduce your alcohol intake. You also need to limit your intake of caffeinated beverages. Tobacco products should also be eliminated. Tobacco and products containing nicotine contribute to poor blood circulation, especially in the inner ears. It is also strongly recommended to keep your weight at a healthy range. Research showed that overweight people are prone to tinnitus.

Essential vitamins

You should equip your body with essential vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin B complex. You can take health supplements containing these vitamins or you might want to get these vitamins from your diet such as meat, eggs, milk, and dairy products.
